Today’s rapidly changing and evolving business environment has redefined the success of negotiations. Fast decision-making requires great influencing skills. We collected some tips for negotiating in 2019, and how to strengthen your authority during the conversation with partners or clients.

Listen

You would be surprised how many people lack this simple skill. One of the main tactics of a successful negotiator is asking a probing question and sit quietly, absorbing all the information they need to know. Allow the other person to do the most talking and ask more open questions.

Research

Get the information about another negotiator not only by listening to them, but doing your homework in advance. Find out who they are, what are their needs and possibilities. Understanding the other side’s situation will enable you to make more accurate decisions and offers.

Meet the needs

In order to succeed in negotiating, it is important to look at the situation from another side’s perspective. Winning at the negotiation is not persuading, but understanding the other person and making them feel satisfied. Don’t forget about the human factor: a lot of people will be more inclined to satisfy your needs if you help them satisfy theirs.

Abstract from personal issues

Don’t take the other person’s behavior personally in business negotiations. Focus on solving the problem and meeting the needs of both parties. Understand the difference in people’s personalities and reactions to stressful situations, and don’t provoke them. Stay professional.
